2001년에는 전쟁이 끝나고서도 척박한 중국에 버려져야만 했던 조선인 피해 여성들을 만나면서 나는 가슴 깊이 그녀들의 고통을 받아들였습니다. 그리고 아시아 여러 나라의 피해자들까지도 만날 수 있었습니다.

중국 내륙의 오지에서부터 인도네시아, 동티모르의 변방 깊숙이 이르는 곳에서까지 살아있는 역사의 진실을 엿볼 수 있었습니다. 80-90대의 고령이 되어 버린 그녀들의 가슴속에 .....

일본군에 의해 강탈 당한 인간으로서의 인생은 되돌릴 수 없는 현실이 되어 버렸습니다. 이중 통역 속에서도 낱낱이 드러나는 그녀들의 한 맺힌 가슴과 거친 숨소리는 70 여 년 전의 과거가 아닌 지금까지도 .....

그녀들은 병들고 , 혼자서는 무엇조차 할 수 없는 몸인 채 역사의 뒤안길로 사라지고 있습니다. 더 이상 누군가의 기억과 눈물이 아니라 이제는 모두의 역사와 인권으로 남아야 합니다.

피해여성이 바라는 것은 그 무엇보다도 누군가의 관심입니다. 지금까지 누군가로부터 위로나 치유를 받아 본 적이 없습니다. 희망엽서는 방문때 생존 여성에게 현지 말로 읽어 주고 전달됩니다.

피해 여성들은 어떠한 삶을 살고 있을까?

제 2차 세계대전, 일본이 전쟁을 일으킨 아시아 태평양 연안의 나라 어디든 수많은 여성들은 일본군으로부터 성폭력을 당해야만 했습니다.

1996년부터 동티모르, 인도네시아, 필리핀, 중국, 조선에서 만난 140여 생존자를 기록하였습니다.

일본군이 설치한 위안소

일본군은 강간방지, 성병예방, 치안유지, 사병의 사기고양 등의 이유로 위안소를 설치했습니다.

일본군이 침략한 모든 곳에 설치되었을 뿐만 아니라 일본국내 탄갱이나 공장 등전쟁 물자 생산을 위한 노동력이 모이는 곳에도 설치되었습니다.
